In 2013, she collaborated on an award-winning project that used simplified iconography to communicate ailments associated with the spread, prevention, and treatment of malaria in Kibera, Kenya. This work has received multiple awards, with Metropolis Magazine naming it runner-up in its Next Generation Design Competition; it also earned the Student Notable Honoree status after placing in the top six of all national entries in the Core77 2013 Design Awards.

Acayo earned an MFA in Visual Communication Design from Kent State University and a BA in Art from Goshen College. As a component of her MFA thesis, she developed a secondary-level design curriculum that was inspired by the paucity of design education in Uganda, despite the growth and increasing number of job opportunities within the country's design sector. This subsequently inspired the creation of DesignEd Uganda workshops that Acayo organizes and facilitates over the summer to equip young people with skills in design and creative problem-solving.

September's speaker will be illustrator/author/designer Jeff Weigel. He'll be demonstrating his storybook app for iPad, STOP MATH, taking folks through the process of creating the app—from his initial interest in creating an app, finding a developer to work with, the process of deciding on the app's functionality and usability, creating the artwork, collaborating with the developer, etc., all the way through to making the app available to a worldwide audience on Apple's App Store. Developer Ed Brown will also be there to discuss and answer technical questions about how the app was created. They'll also preview Ed's soon to be released game app, Paint It Back, for which Jeff did most of the illustration.

This month's presenter is Wally Hauk of Zymo Sculpture Studio. Wally and his staff have created and built about anything and everything a client could request, from ice cubes to Clydesdales. Wally is a real "how it's made" artist and has great stories about figuring out how to realize an art director or photographer's dream in 3-D!

Not only is Wally a superb artist and sculptor but his hobby is building wooden canoes from scratch! His canoe paddles, fish nets and fishing lures are the stuff of legends! Don't miss the evening with one of the best!
